KOLEKSI TULANG IKAN PAUS
PAUS
WHALE (BALAENOPTERA)
Whales are mammal that lives in the ocean and are among the largest animals on Earth. Whales can be classified into either toothed (Odontoceti) or baleen (Mysticeti) species. Instead of teeth, baleen whales have baleen plates in their mouth. The baleen plates are made of keratin and resemble a bristle-like structure. These plates are used to filter food from water, such as plankton and small fish. Whales breathe air into their lungs through the blowhole on top of their heads. The blowhole enables them to take a massive breath at the surface and then close it when they dive. Baleen and toothed whales have different blowholes, with toothed whales having one and baleen whales having two. Whales typically give birth to one calf at a time after a gestation period that can last from 11 to 16 months. Whales are well-known for their ability to swim long distances. Many species migrate up to 20,000 kilometers every year between their feeding grounds in colder waters and their breeding grounds in warmer waters. Indonesia is an important migratory route for several whale species. For example, the blue whales travel through the sea between the Indian and Pacific Oceans from May to October. According to the WWF (World Wildlife Fund), there are around 1.3 million whales, with some populations numbering only a few hundred individuals. The skeleton on display belongs to a blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) that was found stranded near the mouth of the Kampar River on July 3, 1996.
